Joint Pain Q & A

What is joint pain?

Joint pain refers to any aching, discomfort, or soreness that affects any of your body’s more than 250 joints –– the areas where two or more bones meet.

Joints allow you to perform a wide range of motions, from running and walking to lifting and reaching. But over time, they begin to break down and degenerate. Your joints are also susceptible to injuries and illness. Any of these factors can result in pain, and ultimately disability.

What causes joint pain?

Common causes of joint pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Lupus

  • Bursitis

  • Tendonitis

  • Automobile accidents

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Osteoporosis

  • Overuse

  • Certain infectious diseases

When does joint pain become chronic?

Most cases of joint pain are mild and resolve on their own with rest and conservative at-home treatments like ice and heat therapy or over-the-counter pain medication.

If your pain lasts for three months or longer and interferes with your ability to function make an appointment at From Pain To Wellness LLC.

How is joint pain diagnosed?

To diagnose joint pain, the team at From Pain To Wellness LLC reviews your medical history, asks about your symptoms, and conducts a physical exam. During the physical, they gently press on the affected joint (or joints) to pinpoint areas of tenderness or swelling.

The team might also ask you to walk around the room to observe your gait and posture.

If these steps don’t provide enough information to make a diagnosis, your doctor might order a series of X-rays or MRI to assess the integrity of your joint. If the team suspects your pain is due to arthritis, they might also order blood and do an inflammatory workup.

How is joint pain treated?

Treatment of joint pain depends on the severity of your symptoms and the underlying cause. Usually, the team at From Pain To Wellness LLC recommends a combination of physical therapy, healthy lifestyle changes, integrative treatments, and comprehensive medication management.
